We love Halloween. I mean, REALLY love Halloween! Our house is decorated like a graveyard and my kids have been decorating and redecorating for the past month!
Each year I ask the kids what they want to be for Halloween and then I get prepared to make a made sewing dash at the very last minute to accommodate their every changing minds! Well, this year was no different!
Woody is totally into dinosaurs. He can tell you the names, diets, what they look like, etc. He’s very detail-oriented. First he wanted to be a Utahraptor…which, I’m so glad he decided against because I did NOT want to deal with feathers! After a few more rounds, he settled on Spinosaurus. If you haven’t heard of it, look it up – it’s a pretty amazing creature. My son totally turned his nose up at every single kiddie dinosaur costume in stores and online because it wasn’t exactly like a Spinosaurus. So the pressure was on for a mommy-made exact Spinosaurus replica costume!
I used Peekaboo Pattern Shop’s Classic Footed Pajamas as the base. I just modified it so that it wouldn’t have the “feet”. To create the spines, I cut a slit in the back after I finished the whole outfit. I layered batting and double sided craft fuse inside the spines and quilted the outside after that.
The fabric is some yummy French Terry Cotton Lycra from NR Fabrics on Facebook. It’s so amazing that I went back and ordered some of this fabric for myself! I jazzed it up with three colors of fabric paint (one of which is glow in the dark!).
Woody was over the moon when he saw it. I found the mask and sad little tail at Target. His claw hands are courtesy of his Nana. Please note that the Spinosaurus only has TWO claws and NOT three – but he said that these will do for Halloween!!
On to my little Rue. A month ago she decided on Jasmin. Then she changed to a fairy. In the meantime, I was asked to test for a brand new pattern company, Petite Stitchery & Co. I’ll share some more of my official test pics in a different post tomorrow. But there was one picture I got of Ruby that reminded me exactly of Wednesday Addams.
After I saw that picture I knew that I HAD to convince Ruby to be Wednesday Addams for Halloween! She’d already seen the movie and was totally on board when I asked her! WHEW!
Her leggings are Petite Stitchery’s Fawn Leggings. My favorite feature of this pattern is the tuxedo stripe option. The main fabric is black cotton lycra and the stripe is black faux leather from Hobby Lobby (it sews like a dream).
When we went to take pictures, she was totally in character!! She didn’t want to take off the costume afterwards. I have a feeling this will be a favorite outfit after Halloween!
Happy Halloween & Have Fun Ya’ll!
