After testing Peekaboo Pattern Shop’s Bahama Mama Peplum Tankini, my little mini me demanded, I mean requested, one too! I have just about every single Peekaboo Pattern Shop pattern, so my wheels started turning! The Bahama Mama Tankini features a racerback style, just like the Rio Racerback Tank for girls. And the Tutu Cute Swim Suit had the length and style I needed for the skirt part of the swim top!
I started by cutting out both patterns and then laying the Tutu Cute on top of the Rio. The Rio is wider than the Tutu Cute simply because it has a shirt fit and not a swim fit. I wanted the width of my new pattern to be the width of the Tutu Cute.
I then traced the the patterns onto freezer paper so that I didn’t ruin my originals!
I kept the same scoop of the neckline in the front of the Rio. The top of the Bahama Mama Tankini is color blocked, and I wanted the same look for my mini me. I measured 3/4″ down from the side seam and drew a line all the way across. I cut the pattern in half there (see pic). The top portion is going to be the color blocked part and the bottom will be the print. I then cut my fabric, remembering to add the 1/2″ seam allowance on each piece of the top where the color blocking would be.
Next, I laid my top color blocked portion on top of the bottom print right sides together and serged with 1/2″ seam allowance.
After sewing the shoulder and side seams, I added the skirt according to the directions in the Tutu Cute Swim Pattern.
And voila! My Tutu Cute/Rio Mashup!
